This home in the heart of Mount Crested Butte was originally built in 1973. It had served as a comfortable retreat for the Texas homeowner and his family for many decades. It recently came time to update the home’s style, solve its functional problems and take full advantage of its stunning surrounding landscape.
The home had two entries, which was confusing and difficult to maintain in the winter. A single, more gracious covered porch and entry hall was created, which allowed for a reorganization of the main level living spaces.
A remodeled fireplace anchors the living area while a large window wall frames a breathtaking view of Mount Crested Butte, making the scenery a defining feature of the space. This connection to the outdoors extends beyond the glass, as an expanded deck offers both casual seating and a dining area to enjoy the warmer months. Wrapping around the corner, the deck seamlessly transitions to a covered porch with a built-in grill and access to a flagstone patio, complete with a hot tub and firepit.
Entertaining is a priority for this homeowner, so the state-of-the-art kitchen is complemented by a stylish bar that comfortably seats four. Upstairs, a new gable dormer enhances the size and function of the bedrooms and bathroom. An open office overlooking the living area increases workspace and enhances the sense of openness and light throughout the home. Scuptural modern light fixtures float in the lofty living space and give scale to the space. On the lower level, a new laundry room and wine cellar improve the practicality and appeal of the home.
The materials on the exterior are repeated inside to tie the whole home together visually. A rich palette of neutrals includes dark brown beams, warm brown siding and ceilings and accents of beige and grey. A new fieldstone chimney, retaining walls and low walls defining the landscape ground the home to its site and bring all of the materials together.
Throughout the remodeled home, openings are intentionally placed to draw the user into spaces and to frame views to the exterior surroundings. This complete redesign ensures the home remains a welcoming retreat, seamlessly blending comfort, function, and connection to its stunning natural setting for generations to come.
