This 4500 square foot mixed-use building is in Pioneer Plaza, the commercial district of Crested Butte South. Its program includes two two-bedroom apartments on the second level and a residential studio, office space and 3 garage bays on the first. The owner developed the property to give herself a comfortable apartment and heated garage to use while visiting family who lives in Crested Butte and provide rental income with the other 3 units.
The Denver-based owner wanted to bring that city’s strong tradition of brick facades with her to CB South. The front elevation seeks to be unique but complimentary to the adjacent commercial building. Steel beams are expressed on the entry canopies of the front elevation that emphasize the commercial nature of the property.
Energy efficiency was a top priority. Nunatak Energy supported the design and installation of a photovoltaic system on the roof.
While the floor plans of the second level apartments are nearly symmetrical, each west-facing deck was designed to be private, both from each other and from the neighbor to the south.
